Originally known as the “Flour City” due to the booming flour mills along the shores of the Genesee River, Rochester, NY became known as the “Flower City” in 1850 when several seed companies emerged as some of the largest in the world. Today the city we know and love is still officially known as “The Flower City”.

As one of Lock 32’s biggest supporters, Dr. Mark Gibson (Doc Gib’s) generously donated his time and talents to design and build the beautiful African Mahogany bar that is the focal point of our tasting room in Schoen Place. To thank him for this one of a kind custom bar, his favorite Lock 32 brew was named in his honor.

Sam Patch, also known as the “Yankee Leaper” was one of the first great American daredevils after successfully jumping Niagara Falls in 1829. The “Yankee Leaper” then came to Rochester in November of 1829 and successfully jumped the 99 foot High Falls into the Genesee River. After a poor turnout for his first jump, Patch came back a week later and jumped the same falls but this time from a 25 foot stand on top of the 99 foot falls. This jump would prove to be his last.

Before the days of steamboats and railways, the Erie Canal packet boats were the primary mode of transportation between the Hudson River and the Great Lakes. These boats were "fueled" by pulling mules along the towpath. A "Hoggee" was the individual (often a young boy) responsible for tending to and caring for these hard working mules.
